Beyond FAMILIAR: MAVIN Revisited
Five years ago today I wrote my first post (of substance) here on Beyond UNDERSTANDING: Beyond THE FUTURE: MAVIN. I’ve decided to enter my sixth year of blogging by revisiting some of the 200+ resources I’ve highlighted so far. And there’s no better place to start then at the MAVIN Foundation.
An early and original resource for people of mixed-race heritage, MAVIN’s site now offers links to relevant articles such as “Interracial Marriage Still Rising, but not as Fast” (Associated Press, May 2010) and news of upcoming national events such as the first annual Critical Mixed Race Studies Conference November 5-6 at DePaul University in Chicago. MAVIN’s Mixed Heritage Center—a “clearinghouse of information and resources relevant to the lives of people who are multiracial, multiethnic, transracially adopted, or otherwise impacted by the intersections of race and culture”—includes a significant e-library of relevant sites, publications, and books (including Heidi Durrow’s THE GIRL WHO FELL FROM THE SKY); lists contemporary mixed-race artists (need to suggest the addition of Carolyn Battle Cochrane to the film makers’ page!); and hosts the new MAVIN Book Club.

As trusted and innovative as always, MAVIN continues to explore, raise awareness, and offer tremendous support to people of mixed-race heritage as well as other members of interracial families and relationships. So glad to see it growing—and going—strong.
